How to choose a dog groomer in Basildon

Dog grooming is unregulated in the UK. Anyone can buy clippers and open a salon, so the burden of checking falls on you. These are the things that separate the groomers in this directory from each other.

Qualifications

The most common credential locally is City & Guilds, at Level 2 or Level 3. Level 3 is the full diploma and means the groomer has been assessed on breed styling, not just bathing. Several groomers in Basildon, Laindon, Pitsea and Wickford hold it and say so. Dog first-aid training is a good secondary sign. Ask, and expect a straight answer.

One dog at a time, or several?

Some salons work on one dog from start to finish; others bath several, crate them to dry, then clip in turn. Neither is wrong, but a nervous, elderly or reactive dog does far better in a one-to-one setting. Home-based groomers and mobile vans are almost always one-to-one. Larger salons and the chain salon at Pipps Hill are not.

Cages and waiting

Ask whether your dog will be crated and for how long. A salon that books appointments to time, so the dog arrives and leaves within the groom, is easier on the dog than a morning drop-off and afternoon collection.

Insurance

Public liability insurance is not a legal requirement for groomers, so ask. Most of the groomers listed here state that they are insured; the ones that do not mention it may still be, but you should hear it from them.

Coat-specific skills

Wire-coated breeds such as border terriers and schnauzers should be hand stripped rather than clipped if you want the coat to stay wiry. Only a few groomers in the area offer it. Doodles and poodle crosses need someone comfortable with curly coats and honest about matting. If you have a cat, only a handful of groomers here will take one.

Practicalities

Parking matters more than it sounds when you are wrestling a wet dog into a car. Pipps Hill, Barleylands and the Willowdale Centre all have free parking. Several groomers offer collection and delivery, which solves it entirely. Evening and Sunday slots are rare; the Basildon salon with the longest hours stays open until seven.
